Smilin'
Through
By
Billy Cowan, Directed by Natalie Wilson
Peggy
has suspected for a while that her son is gay.
But when Kyle comes out, she is disgusted and
wants him out of the house and out of her life.
Refusing
to accept his mother's hard stance, Kyle barricades
himself into his room and goes on hunger strike,
while Peggy retreats through drunken fantasies
of Hollywood musicals. Will Peggy and Kyle ever
be able to reach a peace agreement or is partition
inevitable?
With
a gay boy on hunger strike, a mother on the drink,
religious leaders exorcising homosexuality, and
members of the Irish Queer Liberation Army fighting
for their right to wear trendy combats, Smilin'
Through is the first truly queer Irish play.
